A parcel estimate is not a cargo tariff
A sample parcel, several cartons and a palletised order may require different services. Do not multiply a historical 2 kg agent estimate to price a commercial consignment. Start with an accurate packing list and ask the provider to identify the service suited to that shipment.
Ocean freight does not require filling an entire container. DHL describes less-than-container-load, or LCL, as sharing a container with other shipments, with consolidation and separation at the two ends. Its quoted scope can range from door-to-door to other transport combinations. Source: DHL Global Forwarding LCL description.
Send one brief to every provider
Use the same data version for both modes. If the factory changes the carton count or dimensions, update every comparison. Estimate labels are useful during planning, but final booking needs the measured packed figures.
- Collection address or named origin point, ready date and who loads the shipment.
- Destination country, postcode and delivery conditions, including whether unloading assistance is required.
- Accurate goods description, quantity, materials and any batteries or other handling considerations.
- Carton or pallet count, outer dimensions per piece, gross weight and whether pieces can be stacked.
- Requested service scope, customs responsibilities and any agreed trading terms.
- A request for the total charge, currency, validity date, exclusions and estimated timing for each stage.
Read the local charges before the headline rate
DHL's LCL cost guide distinguishes weight or volume charges from local handling and possible extras, including non-stackable or dangerous-goods requirements. Those categories explain why a rate per cubic metre is not necessarily the amount due at delivery. Source: DHL LCL cost drivers.
Build a comparison with rows for collection, origin handling, main transport, destination handling, clearance service, delivery and any applicable destination taxes or duties. Put “included,” a confirmed amount, or “unquoted” in each cell. Do not turn unquoted charges into zero. Keep insurance and exclusions visible as their own items.
Ask what happens if the shipment misses the planned departure or needs storage. Identify any charge that depends on days at a terminal or container use, and who controls the release steps. A complete quotation is more useful than a long list of acronyms without responsibilities.
Decide using inventory timing
Air may suit a time-sensitive sample or replenishment; sea may suit planned volume when the schedule permits it. Those are planning possibilities, not a promise that one mode wins every cost comparison. Ask for the expected ready-to-door timeline, including handovers, instead of comparing only flight and vessel travel.
This guide does not publish a current per-kilogram, per-cubic-metre or guaranteed transit figure because no actual consignment has been quoted. Bring the packing brief to your enquiry, and keep the quotation's validity and assumptions with the purchasing decision.
